What's Venous Stasis?

This particular condition is related to slow blood flow in a person’s veins. It is most commonly experienced in the legs.
If you suffer from this problem, you may have any of the following symptoms:
  • Itchiness
  • Dryness
  • Scaly skin
  • Skin discoloration
  • Leg swelling

Causes of Venous Stasis

It's an issue that happens with people with chronic venous insufficiency or those with other issues, such as:
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Varicose veins
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Cellulitis
  • Having a blood clot in the legs previously
  • High blood pressure
A majority of people who have this condition are older than 50. However, you could develop it if you're pregnant.
Other potential risk factors include:
  • Living a sedentary lifestyle
  • Standing for prolonged periods
  • Having a family history of chronic venous insufficiency
  • Having deep vein thrombosis

Diagnosing Venous Stasis

The first portion of your appointment will include you completing a medical history report that asks you questions about your health, including any chronic conditions you have and any your family members have/had.
To properly diagnose the condition, our doctor will need to look at your legs and assess your condition. We will want to know about the symptoms you have, when you experience them, and your lifestyle. Your evaluation may include getting an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Through imaging, our doctor can determine if you have a blood clot, damage in your blood vessels, or another issue.

Treating Your Condition

Currently, there's no way to reverse venous stasis, but that doesn't mean you have to suffer. A doctor from our Cary, NC, practice can recommend ways to manage your symptoms so the condition doesn't interrupt your life. Sometimes, therapy may be needed to remove damaged veins, or stents may be placed to keep the vessels open.
